Torbreck buys leading NZ Pinot producer

Australian winery Torbreck has announced it is buying one of New Zealand’s top Pinot Noir producers, The Escarpment.

The Barossa producer, famed for its Shiraz and Shiraz-blends, has bought the Martinborough-based winery for an undisclosed sum.

The Escarpment’s founder, Larry McKenna (pictured), and all of his staff will reportedly remain in place.

As reported by Adelaide Now, Torbreck’s general manager, Peter Perrin, said the management was “excited” by the acquisition.

“Larry is an international pinot legend and his continued influence on the wines was an essential part of this negotiation,” he said.

“The acquisition is a logical step for Torbreck enabling us to expand our portfolio and bring our well established marketing and distribution strength to build both brands in Australia, New Zealand and beyond.”

Founded in 1999, The Escarpment includes a 19-hectare vineyard and winery capable of handling 300 tonnes.

Its leading wine is the ‘Kupe’ single vineyard Pinot Noir. In addition to red wine it produces Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay.
