Burgundy ‘triumphs’ at Bonhams

A collection of fine Burgundy from a German cellar led the way at Bonhams latest London sale, making over £100,000.

The consignment of top Côte d’Or labels made over £110,000 when it was sold by Bonhams in London on 28 September.

The collection had a particularly strong element of wines from Domaine Armand Rousseau and the sale’s best-selling lot was in fact a 12-bottle case of the producer’s 1999 Chambertin Clos de Bèze which made £17,625 against a high estimate of £15,000.

Other Burugndy lots in the best-sellers were two lots of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti’s Montrachet, with five bottles of the 1979 making £11,163 and another five bottles of the 1977 achieving £8,813.

Overall, the sale made £794,841 (from over 600 lots sold) and aside from Brugndy there was a strong Bordeaux contingent for buyers to get stuck into.

Also selling strongly in the rest of the sale were a dozen bottles of 1992 Petrus which realised £16,450 and another dozen of 1982 Mouton Rothschild which made £12,925. Cases of 1990 Latour and 1982 Haut-Brion were also top-sellers while there was also a rare appearance for a magnum of Egon Müller’s 2011 Scharzhofberger Trockenbeerenauslese which went for £8,813.
