Week in pictures: Hong Kong
Last week has been busy for the Hong Kong’s drinks industry. The drinks business Hong Kong hosted the inaugural Asian Masters Cabernet Sauvignon competition, Berry Bros & Rudd held a Rhone 2015 en primeur tasting, Ned Goodwin MW flew in for an animated and frank masterclass on Champagne and French GourMay hosted a press conference and a tasting of wines from Spain’s Castilla-La Mancha.
A panel of expert judges composed of leading wine merchants,wine educators and sommeliers, including one Master Sommelier, blind-tasted and judged more than 100 wines for the drinks business Hong Kong‘s inaugural Asian Masters Cabernet Sauvignon on Tuesday at the historic Crown Wine Cellar. Berry Bros & Rudd organised a en primeur tasting of the new 2015 Rhône vintage including barrel samples and finished bottles from 23 different domaines and producers from the Rhône valley.
Eduardo Chadwick, the charismatic president of Viñedo Chadwick, was on a short visit to Hong Kong this week to host a wine dinner organised by importer Wines Link to introduce a flight of its 100% Cabernet – 2006, 2009, 2011 and 2014 Viñedo Chadwick. The polo hat prop in the photo is a reference to the fact that the winery’s vineyards were first converted from a polo site, where Chadwick’s father used to play.
Ned Goodwin MW gave an informative and frank masterclass on Champagne dosage, reserve wines and the growing trend for smaller grower Champagne at the most recent SPIT workshop organised by Debra Meiburg Wine Media on Thursday.
Champagne took centre stage at the French GourMay press conference and tasting on Tuesday, a prelude to the upcoming gastronomic celebration in May. During the whole month, more than 220 of its event partners including Michelin-starred chefs, restaurants will join hands to honour Le French GourMay 2017 by creating dedicated menus to match with Champagne, wine tastings, promotions and workshops.
A walk-around tasting of gourmet foods and wines from Castilla-la Mancha, Spain was held on Wednesday. More than 10 wineries and food suppliers flew from Spain to treat Hong Kong foodies and wine lovers to their wines and top ibérico hams.
Nik Weis, owner of Mosel’s St. Urbans-Hof winery, held a master class this week in Hong Kong showcasing the aromas, minerality and depth of his wines. His wines are available at Kerry Wines.
