Majestic launches 2006 ‘Pomerol-lookalikes’ for under £20

Majestic has launched a parcel of 2006 “Pomerol-lookalikes” – which it is selling for around £17.99 a bottle.

The retailer, which rolled out a new commitment to smaller, one-off ‘WIGIG’ (when its gone its gone) wine parcels last September, is marketing the parcel of wines from Lalande-de-Pomerol, which borders the Bordeaux Right Bank’s famous appellation to the north, as a “quality aged Bordeaux at a bargain price”.

“The smart money goes on Pomerol’s next door neighbour. Lalande-de-Pomerol is a relatively unknown region bordering the western edge of Pomerol,” Majestic said. “While Lalande enjoys much of the quality of Pomerol, the prices are a fraction of its neighbours’ superstars.”

Bordeaux buyer James Reed, who secured the 4,000 bottle parcel, said the region showed great potential.
“Because Lalande is one of the regions I see the most potential in Bordeaux for growth and value. The 2006 was tasting great and matured nicely and spot on for our customer base. It was a great price (pre-Brexit!) too,” he said.
The wines are only available online or by direct request from a store, he confirmed.

The Château La Mission 2006 Lalande-de Pomerol comes from small 2ha vineyard in the South West of the appellation, owned by the Garde-Lasserre family, and it is the first time it has been stocked by the retailer. Around 80% of the clay and sand vineyards are planted with Merlot, the remainder being Cabernet Franc. It is being sold by the wine retailer as mix case of six for £17.99 or £19.99 for a single bottle.

Lalande-de-Pomerol is separated from its prestigious neighbour by the Barbanne stream, which also marks the boundary between Saint-Émilion and its satellite appellations.

Pomerol was voted one of the standout regions in the 2006 vintage, and ten years on, Liv-ex reported the appellation had been one of most consistent, along with Pauillac and Pessac-Léognan.

Last autumn, the retailer said its concentration of one-off parcels to give customers “a rapidly changing and exciting range” of exclusive wines, a move made possible by its adoption of a “more disciplined strategy to merchandising” and greater agility in ranging across its stores and online.

Around 15 small parcels tend to be available in store at any one time, with volumes varying from 4,000 to 10,000 bottles per parcel in order that the mechanic can run for either one to two months.
