Vandals drain tanks of 250,000 litres of wine
The Ontario Provincial Police are investigating after tanks at a Canadian winery were “intentionally” tampered with causing the loss of around 250,000 litres of wine worth millions of dollars.
Large holding tanks of red and white wines, belonging to Pelee Island Winery in Kingsville, Ontario, were drained overnight on Sunday to Monday, according to the Windsor Star. The wine lost has been estimated to be worth in the region of CAN$3.3 million.
“We are extremely disgusted and appalled that someone would basically attack one of our local wineries,” said Stephen Mitchell, president of the Windsor Essex County Wineries & Vineyard (EPIC) Winegrowers’ Association, speaking to the paper. “From an Ontario wine perspective, that’s a significant amount of wine.”
Pelee Island Winery has declined to comment on the incident, with police now searching for the culprits.
