Seawater bar to pop up in London

A bar stocked with 10 different regional varieties of seawater is to pop up in Brixton later this month masterminded by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.

As reported by the Evening Standard, The Bottle bar will run from 8-10 September at Pop Brixton and promises the likes of “Cornish Surf” and “Thames Wash” waters.

However, there’s a twist – none of the 10 waters will actually be on sale. The goal of the bar is to raise awareness about the dangers of swimming in the sea.

Instead, the different seawater varieties carry stark warnings on their labels about the risks of the coastlines they were sourced from.

The Cornish Surf label reads: “Infused with rip currents, surging waves and slippery rocks, this water can create dangerous swimming conditions.

“If swallowed, Cornish Surf can cause blood pressure to rise, putting strain on the heart and leading to cardiac arrest even in the young and healthy.”

RNLI’s Thames operations manager Neil Withers told the Evening Standard: “It’s a striking way to catch the eye of young Londoners.

“It’s also a way for us to showcase the courage of our volunteer lifeboat crew members who brave extreme conditions and rescue an average 22 people per day.”

Free mineral water will be handed out at the pop-up and attendees will be encouraged to take part in the H2Only challenge where participants are sponsored to drink nothing but water for 10 days.
