Hoppy days: Little Creatures comes to HK

Australian craft brew company, Little Creatures has set up shop in Hong Kong’s Kennedy Town.

Starting life in a former boat shed and crocodile farm on the waterfront in Fremantle, Western Australia, Little Creatures has now found a second home in Hong Kong’s craft beer hub of Kennedy Town.

Known throughout Australia for its Pale Ale, Little Creatures was established in 2000 by the original brewers of the Matilda Bay Brewing Company. It also takes its name from the Talking Heads Little Creatures album and refers to the live yeast that turns sugars into ethanol.

Asides from its American Pale Ale, its range includes 10 beers, including an Amber Ale, Pilsener, Golden Ale, a Pipsqueak Apple cider and Furphy – an ale made from an original Victorian recipe.

The team behind Little Creatures has now chosen Hong Kong’s Kennedy Town as the location for its new venture and will occupy a 6,000sq foot brewery, with five beers on tap masterminded by brewer Tom Champion and including food by chef, Krysztof Bandel.

In 2008, the company established a second brewery in Healesville, Victoria and was bought by Lion in 2012. In 2013 another brewery was opened in Geelong, Victoria, at a reported cost of AUS$60 million.

Last year, the company reported its brewing capacity as 10 million litres a year, or 80 kegs an hour.

Recently, Hong Kong has seen a surge in home-grown craft brew outfits as its younger drinkers and expats seek alternatives to big beer brands.

Matt Tapper, managing director of Lion Global Markets said: “Little Creatures is very excited to be joining Hong Kong’s local craft community. There is a great deal of opportunity for us to share our passions for full-flavoured beer and help grow and shape craft beef in the region much the same way we did in Australia.”
