Top six wine bars in Hong Kong

Old World classics to high-value New World wonders and exciting natural styles, Hong Kong’s wine scene boasts a wealth of wine bar options offering far more than the simple ‘house red, house white’. Here dbHK presents six of the best.

Given that Hong Kong is Asia’s wine hub, you would expect it to boast an array of bars and restaurants to match. And you’d be right. Hong Kong wine lovers really are spoilt for choice in this regard.

The city is crammed with fine wine, New World wine and organic wine specialists – though it often comes at a price.
Fortunately, there are now plenty of places which offer fine wine by the glass, as opposed to expensive bottles, for those who feel disheartened by the traditional ‘house red’ selections.

Many readers will be familiar with the city, but if you’re new and want to know where to find a glass (or bottle) of Burgundy or natural wine, dbHK is ready to make a few suggestions…

Q88 WINE BAR

Nestled in the JW Marriott, Q88 offers one of the largest collections of fine wine by the glass, with the added bonus of a ‘happy hour’ from 5-8pm. Choose from vintage Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne while taking in the skyline from the floor-to-ceiling glass windows. The resident band takes to the stage from 8.30pm Monday to Saturday.

M BAR

With a fabulous view of Hong Kong on the 25th floor of the iconic Mandarin Oriental, the M Bar is a favourite of weekenders and locals alike with a staggering drinks list encompassing fine wine, whisky, Cognac and cocktails. Champagne enthusiasts can sip on Krug or New Zealand Pinot Noir while soaking up the ambience and tucking into M Bar’s dim sum platters.

LE QUINZE VINS

Le Quinze Vins is tucked away in Wan Chai among the many dim sum and noodle joints which make up the area’s eclectic restaurant scene. From small producers to big name brands, Le Quinze Vins has a particular focus on the Languedoc and Burgundy, and is the sister of the famous drinking haunt in Paris.

LA CABANE

The sister of Cabane a Vin, Hong Kong’s first natural wine cellar, La Cabane pairs small seasonal plates with a fearsome wine list that specialises in delights from the Loire valley. It also hosts regular tasting events so the newly initiated can discover the world of organic wine.

La Cabane’s owners recently opened a second venue, also on Hollywood Road, called Bayta.

WINE BEAST BISTRO

The bistro arm of the Wine Beast retail shop in Wan Chai, this out-of-the-way hideout sells wine at retail price, making it a firm favourite with everyone with even a passing interest in wine. With an extensive list of Burgundy, Bordeaux, and Languedoc wines, as well as New World favourites New Zealand, Australia, Chile and Argentina, Wine Beast also offers a reasonably priced French-inspired seasonal menu.

THE PAWN

With a good selection of wines and beers (the Burgundy list used to be one of Hong Kong’s best), The Pawn is a great place to grab either a drink or a meal after the fair.

Situated in Wan Chai (not far from LQV or Wine Beast), sit on the balcony of one of the city’s last Victorian-era buildings and relax as you prepare to eat at Tom Aikens’ restaurant or dive into the heady delights of Hong Kong’s nightlife.
