Couple tries to sell daughter for whisky

A Romanian couple have been arrested on suspicion of trying to sell their teenage daughter for £2,760, 100 bottles of whisky, two sheep and a pig.

The sale of 15-year-old girl was allegedly agreed as part of a dowry with another Roma gypsy family ahead of an arranged marriage to a 16-year-old boy living in northern Spain, according to reports by The Sun.

Also under investigation are the parents of the girl’s cousin, who are suspected of planning to sell their 13-year-old daughter when she turns 15. The dowry was to have been paid to the couple in two parts; the cash, followed by the whisky and the animals.

Regional equality minister Maria Jose Sanchez Rubio confirmed that both teenagers have been taken into care at their own request and were now being cared for at a specialist centre.

The couple were arrested by Spanish police in Almunecar near the southern city of Granada and have been released on bail pending further inquiries.
