Name game starts for mega-brewer

The £70bn SABMiller tie up with AB Inbev has thrown up serious questions about the monopolisation of the beer market, but the biggest question still stands: what will the new mega-brewer be called?

SABMiller was the name the banks gave the project that combined South African Breweries and Miller Brewing Company, meeaning they probably won’t be giving the new name much thought (Photo: SABMiller)

One website has made it its duty to find the perfect name for the new company, taking suggestions from the public and allowing them to up-vote their favourite ones.

Current favourite is Monopolager, although one predicts that name might run in to legal difficulties if it was taken on by the brewer.

Other front-runners include MegaKega, Beerhemouth, and one for the business and beer nerds out there, M&(IP)A.

“The beer world has fermented a fusion,” the challenge on Popnamer.com reads. “AB InBev and SABMiller, the two largest brewers in the world, reached an agreement on a merger. AB InBev gave them the old ‘there ain’t room in this bar for the both of us, here’s $104 billion.’ And if the deal goes through, one in three of the world’s beers will be sold by the new megabrewery.

“To boot, this merger would combine two nearly-unpronounceable, acronym-name hybrids into one tipsy-turvy behemoth. So, this is where we come in, PopNamers. We’re not gonna call them AB InBev-SABMiller, so what should we call this new company cocktail? Raise a glass, stifle your hiccups, and name the new company!”
