Pavie a second growth after all?

Liv-ex has released the results of its bi-annual classification of the Right Bank and found Pavie to not quite live up to its “A” status when it comes to price.

Every two years Liv-ex reassess the 1855 classification and shows where châteaux would be ranked today according to their average price on the market place.

The main “reclassification” (which, it should be stressed, doesn’t actually change anything) focuses on the Left Bank as the 1855 did.

However, starting in 2013 Liv-ex has created a classification for the wines of the Right Bank in its Right Bank 50 and 100 indices as well, using the same price bands as it does for the Left Bank.

With a reduced number of wines only two bands are necessary, wines over £2,000 a case on average are considered first growths or cru classé “A” and those between £550 and £1,999 second or “B” growths.

Between 2013 and this year only one wine has risen up through the rankings and that is Angélus which is now a first growth with an average case price of £2,019.

Fellow Saint Emilion “A” Pavie meanwhile hasn’t fared quite so well and remains stuck in second growth/”B” pricing territory with an average case price of £1,894.

Pétrus is the undisputed king of the Right Bank first growths with an average case price of £17,884, while Le Pin isn’t far behind on £16,926.

Ausone, Lafleur and Cheval Blanc all sit comfortably in first growth territory.

Liv-ex also ran up a chart using the same criteria for the second wines of the Left Bank’s top properties.

The five second wines of the first growths can all be considered “second growths” when judged on price, with Carruades de Lafite, Les Forts de Latour and Le Petit Mouton all having average prices of over £1,000, Pavillon Rouge being on £886 and Clarence de Haut-Brion right on the cusp with an average price of £550.

Alter Ego de Palmer rose from a fourth to a third in the rankings with an average case costing £387. It joins La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion.
