Bordeaux samples to boast diversity

Bordeaux wine samples are being sent to 800 UK trade professionals this month as the Bordeaux Wine Council seeks to demonstrate the region’s diversity.

The pack, titled Meet the Bordeaux Family, contains 60ml samples of six different appellation wines from the region. It has been developed to encourage the trade to look beyond Bordeaux as only red wine producer.

It contains red, dry white, rosé and sweet white wines, which have been chosen to represent the six Bordeaux family groups: Bordeaux & Bordeaux Supérieur, Côtes de Bordeaux, Médoc, Graves & Pessac-Léognan, Saint-Emilion, Pomerol & Fronsac, Dry White and Sweet White.

It is not yet clear which exact wines have been selected, but they come from this year’s Everyday Bordeaux list selected by the Association of Wine Educators.

Douglas Morton, UK consultant for the CIVB, said the box acts as a reminder that Bordeaux produces wine for all tastes: “For example dry white Bordeaux now accounts for around 25% of Bordeaux’s UK sales, the region’s rosé sales are growing and who can ignore the sweet wine offering?

“Our overriding objective is to remind the trade that this famous region produces quality wines to suit all tastes and occasions,” he said.

The box is accompanied by a brochure that outlines the key assets of each of the six family styles, along with a tasting note for each wine.
