Zachys Asia: May auction ‘upping the ante’

Zachys Asia has surprises up its sleeve for the spring auction which will “present the best of the best” from Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne, as well as a lot of fine whisky.

Granite beauty: The Karuizawa Mercian 21 year old estimated between HK$55,000-80,000

Following hot on the heels of Zachys Asia sale in January where 87% of lots were sold, the May auction, which will be held on 29-30 May at the Mandarin Oriental, is traditionally viewed as Zachys most successful.

Bordeaux highlights include ‘The Chairman’s Collection’, which comprises almost 600 lots of Bordeaux 1980s and 1990s vintages including all first growths.

Zachys also offers various vintages of Petrus (including the crow-winning 1995), Le Pin and DRC from over 10 years’ of collecting by one local resident. The array is neatly available in: ‘A Focused Collection Of Blue Chip Bordeaux And Domaine de la Romanée-Conti From The Cellar Of A Hong Kong Gentleman’ and estimated between HK$140,000 to HK$203,000.

Elsewhere, there’s extensive selections of Dom Pérignon and a jeroboam of 1996 Margaux and unusually, a private collection from the UK which was unearthed from a cellar in the depths of the countryside. Named ‘Treasures from the Cellar of a Distinguished Gentleman’, the collection includes Latour, Haut Brion, La Tache and Montrachet.

Suntory’s Yamazaki, Karuizawa and Hanyu also make an appearance with the Karuizawa Mercian 21 year old offered in a granite decanter. Serious whisky enthusiasts may also want to keep an eye on rare Macallan and Bowmore expressions and in particular, the Macallan 60 year old.

Zachys president, Jeff Zacharia commented: “This city is fuelled by an insatiable passion for the greatest wines and whiskies available from anywhere in the world. This particular sale flawlessly showcases the best of the best that every serious collector in Hong Kong and the rest of Asia is meticulously seeking.”
