Wine-stained shirt on sale for $135

Robert Mondavi Private Selection has collaborated with fashion brand Crawford Denim on a wine-dyed denim shirt with a retail price of $135.

Following on from the successful launch of sunglasses made from wine barrels in collaboration with shade maker Woodzee last year, the Robert Mondavi Private Selection x Crawford Denim Vintner Shirt goes on sale in the US next month.

Described by its makers as “classic yet stylish”, the shirts are hand-dyed with Robert Mondavi Heritage Red Blend 2013, with each bottle able to dye five shirts.

In addition to shirts, 1,000 wine-dyed bandanas were made from 185 bottles of the $13 Syrah/Merlot blend.

“The wine was heated in a bath and the pre-soaked bandanas and fabric were added in to absorb the colour of the wine,” said Susie Shaugnessy, founder of California-based Crawford Denim.

“Along with a small amount of dye matching the wine bath, we used fixing agents to set the colour evenly and to keep the wine from later bleeding or transferring.

“There is variation in each bandana because of the organic nature of each bottle of Heritage Red. Like grapes, no two are the same,” she added.

The limited edition shirts, described as being “versatile enough to wear dressed down in the vineyard”, will be released at the same time as the 2013 vintage of Robert Mondavi Private Selection Heritage Red Blend.
