Top 10 ways to recycle a beer keg

After the success of our top 10 ways to recycle a wine barrel, we decided to turn our attention to beer, discovering a host of weird and wonderful ways to transform the humble keg.

The eco-conscious among us have long trumpeted the benefits of so called “up-cycling” in which disused items are given a new lease of life and a completely new use.

But as this list proves, some have taken their ability to transform an everyday object, such as an unassuming and tired beer keg, to another level.

Scroll through to see some of our favourite ways to up-cycle a beer keg…

A fitting end for a hard-working beer keg?

9. A tasty Tandoor oven

The method for transforming a keg into an Indian Tandoori oven was posted online by one canny inventor here who wanted to make his own naan breads and favourite indian dishes. His process if impressively scientific and well executed.

Signal to your neighbours your love of beer with a crafty keg mailbox.

7. A weighty workout tool

1. A spit roast barbecue

The fun doesn’t stop once the beer keg runs dry. Why not turn your old keg into a spit roast so you can enjoy a cold one while feasting on a slab of meat? Please take advice before attempting this transformation.

Except for the fact that a consumer doesn’t actually own these kegs that they destroy/”repurpose”. Kegs are leased to consumers and it is illegal to do pretty much everything you showed off. Brewers get hit with the cost when you don’t return your keg. Way to treat them.

  2. Joel says:

Well said SlipperyPete – us brewers do occasionally sell old kegs though – just ask us first!

So tired of the statements that the brewer owns the keg and they should get them back. I have two empty kegs that Lagunitas in Chicago refuses to return my $75 each deposit on because I had them for about 8 or 9 months and they have a 6-month return policy that they suddenly decided to enforce. I don’t want them, but now I am stuck with them at a cost of $150. Needless to say, this ended my business relationship with Lagunitas. Funny thing is, they admitted it costs them more to buy a new replacement keg than to refund my deposit, but they thought it a better idea to hold firm to their policy. I am open to offers if anyone is interested.
