As western drinking culture becomes part of life for people living in Asia the number of modern wines bars is increasing.

db reported recently that younger consumers in Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam are driving wine sales as western drinking culture becomes a part of their lives, while Hong Kong continues to demonstrate how the rest of the Asian market could develop.

In Shanghai the number of places where patrons can enjoy good food and a wide selection of wines is on the up. Vinehoo.com recently revealed Shanghai’s best restaurants with a “fantastic wine experience.”

Shàng-Xí

If you fancy trying new style of Chinese cuisine paring with French fine wine, Shàng-Xí restaurant would be a perfect choice. With only 22 seats available for public dinning and five elegant private rooms inside the restaurant, the atmosphere is exclusive.

Yong Yi Ting

Yong Yi Ting specialises in regional Jiang Nan cuisine. The traditional design combined with the outstanding landscape outside makes you feel like you are in a garden of southern China. Jade on 36

Jade on 36 is an award-winning restaurant that has been recognised by Wine Spectator as one of the top 10 business restaurants in China, and also features in Tatler Shanghai’s list of best restaurants. Miele Guide described it as “one of Asia’s finest restaurants”. Chef de Cuisine, Franck Elie Laloum, offers his rich tapestry of culinary experience from some of the finest Michelin star restaurants in France.

There are 420 wines to choose from, with new and old world wines from some of highlt-respected vineyards.

NAPA Wine Bar & Kitchen

Founded in 2007, NAPA Wine Bar & Kitchen brings food and wine experience to a new level with Chef Patrick Dang’s innovative fine dishes and extensive wine list, with over 700 labels. Recently re-located to the Bund, NAPA even further explores its concept of “perfect harmony between food and wine.”

NAPA has one of China’s largest wine selections and its wine list has been frequently awarded by both Chinese and International media.

The 1515 West, Chophouse & Bar

The 1515 West, Chophouse & Bar combines an Old Shanghai movie theme with classic American bar and grill décor. The generous portions of beef, from cattle reared in Australia for The 1515 West, will delight meat lovers.

Sommelier Jerry Liao, who has just won his fifth China Sommelier Competition, provides an appropriately comprehensive wine list. He focuses on exploring the potential of small wineries and has an impressive range of wines at reasonable prices.

Sarment

Sarment is committed to delivering “the ultimate wine experience with the most highly trained wine advisors you could find in the country”. The restaurant puts a high emphasis on food and wine pairings, and aims offer its guests “rich but not overly expensive wine selections”. Sarment’s current sommelier Swift Hu, who won a third place in China Sommelier Competition and is considered to be rising star sommelier in China.

100 Century Avenue Restaurant

This Shanghai restaurant combines views over the city from the 91st floor of one of the world’s tallest buildings with the one of the most dynamic show kitchens in Shanghai. Added to this is an extensive wine list of 36 wines available by the glass and over 500 wines by bottle. Multiple show kitchens appeal to all tastes and feature Western steakhouse, Chinese wok, steamed specialties and Japanese sushi and sashimi.

All wines are carefully selected by Park Hyatt’s wine advisor Jean Marc Nolant and sommeliers Adrien Zhang and more than 80% of the wines on offer are organic or biodynamic wines.

Pelham’s restaurant

Set in the Waldorf Astoria on The Bund, Pelham’s has recently introduced a new menu of modern French cuisine under the guidance of Chef Bruno Bruesch. A floating glass exhibition kitchen anchors the main dining area, creating a sense of theatre and dynamism. The walk-in wine display, which doubles as a unique private dining suite, offers a global selection of over 500 fine wines and vintage Champagnes.

The Cathay Room

A sociable dining experience with elegantly presented modern European home style cuisine and views overlooking the Bund, the Cathay Room has long been an epicenter for European cuisine in Shanghai.
