Drinkaware appoints leading health expert as trustee

Former director of public health in the National Health Service, Dr Catherine Brogan, has been appointed by Drinkaware to its board of trustees.

The board is designed to “represent a balance of expertise and experience across all sectors related to alcohol as well as the wider community,” hence the reason for Brogan’s appointment.

Brogan has over 10 years experience in public health – she is also a general practitioner – and she is a founding member of the Public Health Action Support Team, which gives health advice to the public and training to “health and wellbeing commissioners”.

Brogan said: “I am very pleased to join the Drinkaware Board which represents a good example of how leading health experts, the alcohol industry, government as well as talented people from marketing, behaviour scientists and others can work together to promote healthy behaviours and reduce problem drinking.

“The NHS currently spends £2.7 billion on alcohol abuse and the societal costs are much higher. Drinkaware is an opportunity for interested parties to address these issues together.

“During my term as a trustee I will use my public health knowledge and skills to help to tackle the problems in ways that The Marmot Review highlighted – ‘help the poorest fastest’”.
