Morgenster Estate unveils white wine

To mark its 300th anniversary Morgenster Estate South Africa has unveiled its first white wine.

Made in the classic Bordeaux style, Morgenster White 2011 is a blend of Sauvignon Blanc (55%) and Semillon grapes from vineyards in the Schapenberg area, within a kilometre of Morgenster’s cellar.

Winemaker Henry Kotzé said that Morgenster White 2011 is “delicately wooded” and was crafted in line with Morgenster’s philosophy of producing wines that can age well.

Just over 3,000 bottles of the maiden vintage were produced and it will be available later in the year from Enotria, Morgenster’s newly appointed importer into the UK.

Daniel Hart, wine buyer of Enotria said: “Morgenster is a wonderfully complementary partner in our award-winning South African portfolio.

“The ability to offer mature wines that have aged gracefully in the Morgenster cellars, and released at their peak, is an exciting proposal for our premium dining and independent retail customers. We expect demand for the limited release inaugural white blend to be high when it is launched in the UK later in the summer.”

Morgenster’s owner, Giulio Bertrand, who bought the estate in 1992 says: “At Morgenster we have never made commercial decisions but are concerned with doing the right things to achieve excellent wines”. He adds that his winemaking team’s efforts are being revealed in the glass, leading to export growth around the globe.”
