US consignor boosts Sotheby’s sale

The opening two-day sale of the Sotheby’s spring season in Hong Kong was 100% sold and raised HK$63.6 million.

Achieving over US$8m, the sale easily passed its high-estimate and included the ninth part of a cellar from a “Great American Collector”, as well as ex-cellar collections from Louis Roederer, Château Angélus and Colgin Cellars.

The sale from the American collector is one of the most successful in the auction house’s history and raised over US$2m – bringing the cumulative total for all previous sales of the same cellar to US$45.2m.

The top three lots were a case of 1982 Pétrus for US$65,962; three double magnums of 1982 Lafite for US$56,538 and a case of 1982 Lafite for US$37,692.

The following day saw particularly strong bidding for the ex-cellar collections, with a case of Louis Roederer 1990 reaching US$7,538; a horizontal of five magnums of 2005 Syrah from different plots on the Colgin Estate achieving US$6,910 and one lot containing three magnums of 1990 Angélus making US$4,712.

Serena Sutcliffe MW, international head of Sotheby’s Wine, commented: “This was an exciting weekend of wine sales for Sotheby’s in Hong Kong, bringing to Asia superb direct-from-the-cellar collections which wine lovers lapped up with great enthusiasm.

“Mature, classic Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne were a huge success, with California’s Colgin Cellars flying to new heights.”

Sotheby’s next sale in New York on 28 April will feature ex-cellar collections of Yquem and Cheval Blanc from 1892 to 2009.

Acker Merrall & Condit had a similar run of luck in Hong Kong at the end of last week with an auction that was 95% sold and achieved HK$58,311,930 (US$7,475,888).

The sale featured extensive collections of Bordeaux and Burgundy that sold strongly, as has been a feature of this season so far, with all of the major houses having reported sales that were 100% or near-100% sold and with encouraging returns as well.

Particularly interesting though was the ex-cellar collection of Antinori wines, which included verticals of Solaia, Tignanello and Guado al Tosso with some in never before released formats such as a 12 litre Balthazar.

The highlight of the collections was a 24 bottle and 12 magnum collection of Solaia 1997 and 2007, which made US$21,272.
