Justin James to leave Sainsburys BWS role

Justin James, beers, wines and spirits category manager for Sainsbury’s, is leaving his post in July to start a new role as senior manager for new business development at the multiple retailer.

Commenting on the role change, James (left) said: “I’ve really enjoyed my time in the drinks market and am really excited about my new role; it offers me a great opportunity to move my career forward in Sainsbury’s.”

Sainsbury’s group development director Luke Jensen, who James will be reporting to, said: “Justin has done a huge amount to develop the beers, wines and spirits category over the last few years and brings with him a wealth of experience.

“I look forward to welcoming him to the team and working with him on Sainsbury’s future direction.”

Replacing James as BWS category manager is Andy Phelps, currently on a short secondment as Sainsbury’s regional operations manager for west Scotland and previously category manager for frozen foods.

“I am delighted to be joining such a vibrant team within Sainsbury’s food and drink category,” said Phelps.

“As the only supermarket within the big four to employ its own winemakers, we have made huge advances in moving forward our customer choice by improving the quality and expanding the scale of our house and "Taste the Difference" wine ranges.

There is plenty of opportunity for further development and I am confident that we will be able to build upon Justin’s work within the category to deliver this.”

Phelps, who has worked for Sainsbury’s since 2003, starts as BWS category manager in August.
