First African artist for Taittinger Collection series

Senegalese artist Amadou Sow has created the latest limited edition bottle for the Taittinger Collection Champagne range, to house the 2002 vintage.

The Champagne will be available from UK agent Hatch Mansfield from late March with an RRP of £175.

The 12th in the series of bespoke bottles, Sow is the first African artist to be commissioned by the Champagne house.

Previous contributors have included Japanese painter Toshimitsu Imai, American pop artist Roy Lichtenstein and American Neo Dadaist Robert Rauschenberg.

Taking the universe as his inspiration, the design, christened “Cosmic Pearls”, depicts a star-studded African night sky and the cosmos beyond.

“The Taittinger Collection continues to be one of the most eagerly-awaited releases from the Taittinger house,” said Hatch Mansfield marketing director Lynn Murray.

“They are eye-catching, striking pieces which appeal not only to the avid collector but those looking for an unusual and memorable gift.”

Taittinger Collection was the brainchild of Claude Taittinger, who, in 1983, asked Hungarian artist Victor Vasarely to create a distinctive look for a small number of 1978 bottles.

The concept proved so popular that Taittinger has continued to handpick artists to commemorate their special vintages.

The 2002 vintage, a blend of 50% Chardonnay and 50% Pinot Noir, will go on sale at selected independent wine merchants and retailers.
