Rare Budvar arrives in the UK

Czech beer lovers are cheering the news that Budweiser Budvar has launched its acclaimed unpasteurised lager in the UK.

It’s the first time that the golden krausened lager has been properly distributed outside of the Czech Republic.

Because of the short shelf life (akin to that of real ale) and delicate draught condition, Budvar UK is only releasing it four times a year and is being extremely fastidious in choosing the venues that can stock it.

Initially it has been launched in just five London pubs: the Draft House in Clapham, Battersea and Tower Bridge, the White Horse in Parsons Green and the Porterhouse in Covent Garden.

The beer, which is enhanced with the addition of an extra dose of yeast before kegging, has only previously been available in the UK at the Great British Beer Festival and White Horse beer festivals.

Joe Laventure, sales director of Budvar UK, said: “This is a beer that is very sought after. It took the Czechs some persuading to get it over here.

Even in the Czech Republic, distribution is very limited. Bars have to apply and be vetted. The same process applies to the UK. The beer will not be available to everybody.”
