Enterprise Inns pilots carbon-cutting service

Enterprise Inns has partnered with the Carbon Trust to cut its energy costs in a brand new initiative.

The pub group aims to reduce its energy consumption by 30% through a new service offered by the Carbon Trust, which could save the chain upwards of £11 million a year.

The web-based scheme will allow pub owners to monitor their energy consumption and learn how to manage and reduce it as a result.

A total of 40 pubs in the Enterprise group will participate in the six-month trial and each pub has the potential to save £2,400 in this period alone, running up cost savings of nearly £100,000 for the group.

Linda Kibble, divisional facilities manager at Enterprise Inns, said: “One of the largest operating costs for a pub is energy, at an average of £16,000 per annum. Pub retailers frequently ask us for advice on where they can make the biggest energy savings.

“We believe the outcomes of this pilot will shape a service that will benefit all retailers, not only by offering advice and useful tips but by giving retailers confidence to invest in technology that will help them increase their operating profit.

“We expect this programme to deliver energy cost savings of between 10% and 30% at each retailer, which would generate a significant increase in operating profit.”

The Carbon Trust suggests a number of simple moves that publicans can take to save money, such as lowering room temperatures by one degree Centigrade, which can reduce annual heating bills by as much as 10%.

Dominic Burbridge, the Carbon Trust’s senior adviser to the hospitality and leisure sector, said: “There is a huge opportunity to cut energy costs and carbon emissions in pubs across the UK. All it takes is the knowledge of what to do and the motivation to do it.

“We have advised Enterprise Inns on how best to focus its efforts to make its pubs more energy efficient and we have been very impressed with the company’s practical and proactive approach. This new service should give pub operators the support they need to deliver real and rapid savings.”
