Wells & Youngs loses lagers

Regional brewer Wells & Young’s has lost the distribution contracts for Corona and Red Stripe.

Wells & Young’s had distributed the Jamaican lager and the Mexican beer for 15 years and 30 years respectively and it is believed that the two brands account for as much as 40% of the Bedfordshire brewer’s turnover.

Red Stripe will be taken under the wing of owner Diageo, which recently broadened its UK beer business with the launch of Windhoek, while Grupo Modelo has ushered Corona Extra into the portfolio of Molson Coors.

Wells has been unable to confirm whether the loss of the brands will result in redundancies but has pledged to move quickly and strengthen a lager portfolio which includes Estrella Dam and Kirin Ichiban.
