Cocktail paradise – provided you have the key

A new bar has opened at London’s cocktail specialist venue Callooh Callay in Shoreditch.

The Jubjub private members club is hidden away behind a wardrobe and up a flight of stairs but, although entry is free, patrons will require a member’s key, which is earned at the discretion of the venue’s management.

Only those who show an honest love and clear appreciation of cocktails will be allowed entrance to the bar, according to Jubjub.

A team of bartenders led by bar owner and master mixologist Richard Wynne, ably supported by Cocktail World Cup winner, Sean Ware, and World Bourbon Champion Andrea Montague, will be responsible for mixing drinks made from the best and hardest to source ingredients.

In addition to its selection of cocktail flights, each week one of the team will create a new cocktail for Jubjub members based on their favourite drinks and classic mixes.

Guest bartenders from around the world will also be invited to delight members with their concoctions.

Furthermore, Tasting Tuesdays will be held on the second Tuesday of each month with a featured spirit and cocktail.

Described as a “whimsical” den with a capacity of 20 to 30 people, the venue features an Alice in Wonderland-inspired interior, much in keeping with Callooh Callay itself, which was inspired by Lewis Carroll’s poem Jabberwocky from Alice Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There.

The venue has also introduced a new Japanese-themed menu of sushi, Japanese snacks and hot dishes, created by chef Yukka Toshimito to complement the drinks list.
