Mercat Bar named Most Loved pub in UK

The Mercat Bar in Edinburgh has been named the UK’s Most Loved pub according to a nationwide search by TheBestOf.

Customers praised the pub’s unbeatable customer service and welcoming atmosphere as it beat off stiff competition to claim top spot in the poll, receiving a total of 526 recommendations over the 14-day poll.

The Mercat Bar is owned by Graham Blakie, who bought the business in 2005.

A statement by TheBestOf, a directory of the country’s best local businesses, said: “With its stylish interior and freshly cooked gastro style food, this well known bar and restaurant has a welcoming atmosphere and is run by a well trained team who provide sterling customer service with a smile.”

Blakie added: "It is fantastic to have received so many testimonials and see how much our customers appreciate the great food on offer and the welcoming atmosphere. All my staff are highly trained, so we can provide that ‘personal touch’ meeting all our customers’ needs.”

The 526 recommendations bestowed on the bar during the campaign included praise for its ‘first class food’, ‘excellent service’ and ‘friendly lively bar’.

Customers thought the menu of fresh, locally sourced food was varied and good value, with the breakfasts coming particularly highly recommended.

“Graham is running a superb business, and should be rightly proud to be the most loved pub in the UK – but to be honest what’s been underscored again and again in this campaign is just how many fantastic local pubs there are in the UK today, and how keen people are to praise them”, said Nigel Botterill, CEO of TheBestOf.
