Openings: The Sun at Northaw

Fancy a pub lunch and some fresh air? The Sun at Northaw is a newly opened pub in rural Hertfordshire, just outside Potters Bar and the M25.

Chef Oliver Smith has made a point of sourcing all his food from the east of England. Diners can even look up the provenance of the dish in front of them by perusing the food map laid out on each table, showing the location of 23 of the pub’s producers.

As this approach suggests, the menu has a strong seasonal feel, with a focus on local organic and biodynamic produce. Starters feature the likes of nettle soup with Great Garnetts Farm smoked bacon and three-cornered garlic flowers; while the main course includes sustainably sourced wild Suffolk coast sea bass fillet with Brancaster mussels and wild fennel.

In addition, The Sun offers guests a traditional roast on Sunday, a specially designed children’s menu and, during the middle of the week, an all day bar and sandwich selection. A new outdoor bar and barbeque is due to be set up later this summer in the pub’s extensive garden area.

As you might expect, the drinks menu includes English sparkling wine from Nyetimber and Balfour vineyards and an eclectic selection of local beers, such as Buntingford Golden Plover and Adnams Broadside bitter.
