LIWSF PREVIEW: Seminars and industry briefings

As if there weren’t enough wines to taste and industry figures to network with, the impressive selection of seminars will also be competing for your time.

Our very own drinks insight will kick off the industry briefings on Tuesday morning, addressing the subject of packaging innovation. This will be followed by a briefing at 1pm by WRAP – the Waste and Resources Action Programme. To round off a busy day, The Closure Debate should be as contentious as always.

The seminar schedule for 2007 will be launched by New Zealand producer Te Mata Estate, offering a tasting that will span the 25 years of its flagship wine, Coleraine. The producer is New Zealand’s oldest winery (established in 1896) and is still family owned. The audience for this seminar will be the Circle of Wine Writers.

A worthwhile challenge is acquiring a highly sought after ticket for the drinks business award ceremony at 12.30pm on the Wednesday. This prestigious event is undoubtedly one of the fair’s highlights. Current and previous entrants, as well as previous winners will all have reserved places at the ceremony.

The health benefits of red wine has been a hot topic in the press in the past few months. A recent report that the highest concentrations of procyanidin (believed to be beneficial to cardiovascular health) are apparently found in wines from France’s south west has inspired a seminar on May 22. The discussion will be led by Roger Corder from Queen Mary’s School of Medicine.

New Zealand’s distinctive Sauvignon Blanc comes under the microscope at 2pm on Wednesday in the South Gallery in rooms three and four. Following research undertaken by the Marlborough Research Centre and Auckland University, funded by the New Zealand wine industry, the seminar will investigate the seven flavour profiles that were identified.

An alternative to this is the Fairtrade wine seminar between 2pm and 3pm on Wednesday. The final industry briefing slot on Thursday afternoon belongs to the International Wine and Spirits Record, who will focus on “The Future of Sparkling Wine” this year.
