Tesco unveil fine wine format

Tesco has launched a range of 50 top-end wines for nearly 200 of the multiple retailer’s stores.

Tesco has launched a range of 50 top-end wines for nearly 200 of the multiple retailer’s stores. All are additions to the current Tesco offering of 750 wines and vary in price from £10-£100, although the majority are priced between £15 and £25.

The wines will be housed in specially-designed dark wood shelving units which allow bottles to be laid on their side while incorporating space for detailed point of sale material. As many as 90 of Tesco stores will carry all 50 of the wines and a further 100 will carry a tailored display of 25 wines. The new wine fixtures will be in place by mid-April.

Jason Godley, category manager for wine at Tesco, says: "Our customers have made it clear that they want to be able to buy more premium wine, and we’re simply responding to consumer trends. It’s great for us to be able to take on new suppliers and to make premium wines more accessible than ever."

"The wine team has relished the opportunity to source and sign-up interesting and exciting wines, and has risen to the challenge of securing sufficient volumes to allow them to be introduced into such a significant number of stores. In some cases, this has meant taking the producer’s entire vintage".

The range includes, among others, Jackson Estate Grey Ghost Sauvignon Blanc 2005; 2004 Chassagne Montrachet, Lamy Pillot; Tim Adams The Aberfeldy Shiraz 2001; 1999 Barolo Riserva Michele Chialo, and 2000 Trimbach Riesling.
