All the medallists from the Global Organic and Vegan Masters
Organic and vegan wines are becoming more and more diverse in terms of geography and style, but are they any good? Patricia Stefanowicz MW reports.
SUSTAINABILITY IS becoming more of a priority, and climate change is no longer a myth; it is reality. Protection of the environment, therefore, is high on the global agenda, and for many consumers eating and drinking green is paramount. Surprising moments are part and parcel of judging the Global Organic and Vegan Masters. It’s exciting to know absolutely nothing about the wine (for example, its grape variety or origin), only its price point and that it has been produced from organically grown grapes and/or is vegan-friendly. In the end, we have to judge the wines as wines.
The clear sparkling winner, winning a Gold medal, was Champagne Drappier’s Clarevallis, a blend of Pinot Noir, Meunier, Chardonnay and Blanc Vrai. Unoaked still whites were inconsistent, but there were still some good examples. Under £10, J García Carrión’s Don Simon Nature Organic White Wine won a Gold. Gérard Bertrand’s Naturae Orange, and Genora from Languedoc-Roussillon both deserve a mention for their Silver medals. The oaked whites fared better. Golds were earned by Leth’s Roter Veltliner Ried Fels am Wagramer Scheiben at around £30 and Gérard Bertrand’s delicious oaked Orange Gold at around £15.
The rosé wines, it must be said, were underwhelming: the aim to go ever paler in colour seems to take away fruit flavour. But there were some good wines, including Château de Galoupet’s G de Galoupet and its higher-priced Cru Classé, as well as Château Léoube’s Secret.
GLUGGABLE DRINKS
Unoaked red organic/vegan wines were variable. The better wines are juicy, gluggable drinks when slightly chilled. Sensi’s Vegante, made mostly from Sangiovese, and Susana Balbo’s Crios Sustentia Organic Malbec were awarded well-deserved Golds.

Among the oaked red wines, there is excellent value under £15: Gemtree Wines GSM and Baileys of Glenrowan Atmata Shiraz, both from Australia, gave Gold- worthy delight, as did Argea’s Terra Organica Puglian Primitivo, Bodegas Salentein’s Killka Malbec from Argentina and Viña Emiliana’s 57 Rocas Carmenere. Above £20, there were plenty of superb oaked reds, including Hafner Family Estate from Burgenland’s Cuvée Red Reserve Kashmir at £25, which took home a Gold.
At £30–£50, Arinzano’s Merlot from Navarra and Gemtree Wines’ Obsidian Shiraz from South Australia both picked up Master medals, the latter showing yet again how great is the value of Australian Shiraz. Meanwhile, from Mexico, Casa Madero’s Cabernet Sauvignon was awarded a Gold.
Above £50, there were some seriously delectable wines, including Rocca di Montemassi’s Super-Tuscan Cabernet blend, which won a Gold – and another Italian wine, which became our Grand Master: Castello di Albola’s Acciaiolo. This year’s competition showed variable quality, but also the seriousness with which winegrowers are taking organics when producing their wines.

About the competition
With high-quality judges and a unique sampling process, The Global Organic & Vegan Masters provides a chance for your wines to shine. The 2025 competition was judged on 18 June at COMO Halkin in London, employing experienced judges. The top wines were awarded Gold, Silver or Bronze medals according to their result, and those expressions that stood out as being outstanding received the ultimate accolades – the titles of Organic & Vegan Master or Grand Master.
