New on Wine List Confidential: Duck and Waffle

Duck and Waffle – Wine List Confidential Score: 85.4

All-night drinking at altitude. That rarest of rare options is available up here among the clouds at Duck and Waffle.

Would sir or madam care for an exclusive rendition from Bruno Paillard, or a magnum of Cristal at 4am from the extensive Champagne list? Well, it is yours… But beware, occasionally, of mark-ups as sheer-seeming as the 40th floor of the Heron Tower on which you are dining.

Overall, this is an inquisitive list arranged by colour and country, albeit with no obvious order in the way a given country’s wines are presented.

It embraces the New World, with a useful selection from South Africa alongside a radiant look at the USA today, unsurprisingly given the restaurant has North American parentage.

From the signature, eponymous duck and waffle dish, available from dawn to dusk and indeed all the hours in between, to, from the all-day menu, spicy ox cheek doughnut with apricot jam and smoked paprika sugar, this is a decadent menu to please hedonists rather than dieticians, with plenty of sparkle and worldly picks in a wine sense to bring a degree of high-toned harmony alongside.
