Domaine Thomson launches Les Evocelles
Domaine Thomson has launched its first vintage of Gevrey-Chambertin ‘Les Evocelles’, a small parcel it acquired in 2013.
Owned by New Zealand-Singaporean couple David and PM Hall-Jones, the parcel of Les Evocelles is located “right next to” the premier cru site ‘Les Champeaux’ and the vines are close to 100-years old.
Despite 2013 being a somewhat tricky vintage in Burgundy, requiring rigorous sorting, the new wine has received a 97-point score from one of New Zealand’s leading critics, Bob Campbell MW.
Originally owners of Domaine Thomson in Central Otago, the Hall-Jones’ acquired the Gevrey-Chambertin property in 2011 and set about restoring it.
The couple’s work in the commune and that of their winemaker, Gerard Quivy, ensured they were among those approached by the parcel’s former owner when he decided to sell up.
‘Les Evocelles’ is derived from old Burgundian dialect meaning a ‘wooded’ or ‘bushy’ place.
