AB InBev’s Grupo Modelo builds US$760 million Mexican brewery
Grupo Modelo, owned by AB InBev, is building a brewing and bottling complex in Mexico’s city of Apan, in the state of Hidalgo, investing around MXN14 billion (US$760 million).

The site, which is set to give the beer giant integrated and boosted capacity in central Mexico, has been designed to meet an initial capacity of up to 12 million hectolitres a year, which will make it among Grupo Modelo’s largest facilities globally.
Meeting demand
Mexican beer brands like Corona have experienced massive popularity and market shifts in the US of late, largely driven by hipster lifestyle branding and shifting sales dominance connected to import and tariff pressures.
According to reports from the Rio Times, the scale supports both domestic demand for beer, but is also set to boost Mexico’s beer exports with the market already being the world’s top beer exporter with Corona as its flagship brand.

Assisting the Mexican market, the move has meant that the construction of the brewery site has offered work to more than 4,500 workers to assist in the build. In addition to this, more than 600 people in Mexico have also already been hired and trained to run the beer and bottling plant.
Part of the wider plan
According to AB InBev, the Hidalgo plant is one piece of its Grupo Modelo pledge to invest more than US$3.6 billion in Mexico between 2025 and 2027.
Despite these forward moves, one of the US largest unions, The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, has recently reiterated that it wants Trump to impose tariffs on Mexican beer and has reportedly stated that more of it should be brewed by US workers instead of being made across the border.
db has reached out to AB InBev for further insight into the investment and the export plans for the site.
