Marta Vidal elected president of Cava DO

Marta Vidal has been elected as the new president of Spain’s Cava Designation of Origin (DO) for the next four years.

The appointment was confirmed on Thursday following a vote by the Plenary Session of the Regulatory Council, held at its headquarters in Vilafranca del Penedès, Catalonia. Vidal secured an absolute majority of votes from council members, who represent both grape growers and wine producers.

Vidal becomes the first woman to lead the organisation in its history.

The newly elected president will serve a four-year term and has pledged to strengthen the reputation of Cava, support vineyard development and rebuild confidence across the sector.

Speaking after the vote, Vidal thanked members for their support and said she accepted the role with “enthusiasm, humility, respect and an absolute commitment to the future of Cava”.

Pledge to unite the sector

She said one of her main objectives would be to unite the industry behind a shared vision and ensure that Cava receives the recognition it deserves in domestic and international markets.

Born in the Penedès wine-growing region, Vidal holds a degree in Business Administration and Management and has spent much of her career in the banking sector, where she held senior leadership positions.

Since 2017, she has served as chief executive of Vallformosa, a winery based in Vilobí del Penedès with more than 150 years of history. During her tenure, she has overseen efforts to modernise and professionalise the company’s business operations.

Alongside Vidal’s appointment, the council elected David Sendra Anglès as vice-president. He will support the presidency throughout the new four-year mandate.
