Brew York to open new taproom in stately home country estate
North Yorkshire-based brewery Brew York is due to open a brand new taproom on a Grade 1-listed country estate this summer.
The new space, which will be named the Carlton Towers Taproom, will be based between Selby and Goole within the 250 acre Carlton Towers estate which is already used as a wedding venue and has its own vineyard.
The estate is the family home of Lord and Lady Gerald Fitzalan Howard and will be Brew York’s ninth venue, following its most recent opening of The Old Grey Mare in Clifton in February.
The site was, according to local reports, formerly home to Little Black Dog Brewery and is now being refreshed to create a taproom space to meet the needs of the community.
Speaking about the new space, Brew York co-director Wayne Smith lamented about the demise of the former brewery that used to operate there and said: “We’re genuinely excited to be working with the team at Carlton Towers on this special project” but explained how Brew York was also “really sad that our friends at Little Black Dog Brewery were unable to keep the venue open”.

According to Smith, the plan is to “build upon the great work” that Little Black Dog had “already done to make the venue a thriving community hub”.
He added: “The estate is a beautiful and historic setting, and we see a huge opportunity to create something really special here — combining our love of craft beer with the charm and character of the local area.”
The taproom is set to showcase Brew York’s full portfolio alongside food, events, and collaborations. Plus, the brewery has alluded to wanting to work with the estate to make “future plans to host festivals, support local producers, and offer experiences that reflect the values both brands share”.
A complete refurbishment is scheduled to begin in early 2026, however, in the lead up to that time, Brew York will reopen the venue in the coming weeks under its management.
Last year, Brew York collaborated with York-based band Shed Seven to produce two beers to celebrate the group’s 30th-anniversary tour. The brewery has gone from strength-to-strength over the past few years with its move to sign two big supermarket deals back in 2022 assisting greatly in getting its beers recognised and more widely available to consumers and beer fans across the UK.
