Top 10 most searched cocktails in UK revealed

New research has revealed the UK’s cocktail loyalties for 2024, with Espresso Martini and Negroni sharing the title of the nation’s most popular. Each garnered 74,000 average monthly searches.

Globally, however, Margarita emerged as the undisputed champ with 1.5 million searches. The Mojito claimed a respectable second place with 1.2 million searches, while Negroni and Espresso Martini trailed in third and fourth places with 1 million and 823,000 searches, respectively. Espresso Martini: caffeine sophistication

The Espresso Martini owes its existence to the late Dick Bradsell, who reportedly invented it in London in the 1980s for a customer seeking “something to wake me up, then f**k me up.” Legend has it that Kate Moss or Naomi Campbell may have inspired the drink, though the truth remains hazy.

Bradsell combined vodka, espresso, sugar syrup, and coffee liqueur (traditionally Kahlúa or Tia Maria) into what became a modern classic. Despite complaints from bartenders about its preparation time, the drink’s popularity has endured, fuelled by countless variations, from Toasted Marshmallow to Chocolate Orange Espresso Martinis.

Negroni: Italy’s bitterly beloved icon

Meanwhile, the Negroni continues to charm aperitif enthusiasts with its equal parts gin, Campari and vermouth rosso. Though its exact origins are disputed, the cocktail’s bittersweet appeal is undeniable. Emerging in Italy during the mid-20th century, it has become a staple of sophisticated sipping.

The Negroni’s Instagram-friendly garnishes and adaptability – think the viral Negroni Sbagliato – keep it relevant among younger drinkers.

Regional Sips: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland

Across the UK, preferences vary slightly. Espresso Martini and Negroni topped the lists in Wales and Scotland. In Northern Ireland, Espresso Martini held first place, with Margarita and Negroni tying for second. In England, Pina Colada and Margarita matched each other for the second spot.
