Is Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie still thriving?
Delle Venezie, the Italian region responsible for around 40% of the world’s total Pinot Grigio production, has released its 2024 data. db reports.
DOC Delle Venezie, which comprises around 32,000km2 of vineyard across Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Veneto and Trentino, has unveiled its balance sheet for 2024.
The numbers show slow and steady production growth for Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie, with volumes up 3% in 2024 to reach a total of 1,706,466 hectolitres bottled. In 2023, Delle Venezie bottlings grew by 2%, showing a gradual but important increase from year to year.
“These figures underscore the healthy state of DOC Delle Venezie, with the growth in bottled products clearly proving that Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie meets consumer expectations,” said Stefano Sequino, director of the DOC Delle Venezie Consortium.
Still Vs sparkling
Speaking to db, Sequino revealed that the appellation’s volume data accounts for both still and sparkling Pinot Grigio. In 2024, still wines made up 98% or 225 million bottles, sparkling wines made up 0.48% or 11 million bottles, with frizzante (lightly sparkling wines) representing 15 million bottles, he said.
Making up the rest of the DOC’s total volumes are Bianco delle Venezie wines (made from different white grapes including Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Incrocio Manzoni, and more), which account for 0.07% of the DOC, or 1.6 million bottles.
The Consortium said it does not currently have value sales available to share for the 2024 period.
Top markets
According to Sequino, North America is still the biggest market for Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie, accounting for 43% of sales in 2024.

Next up, is the UK which snapped up 27% of bottles of the Italian region’s wine.
The third most important market is Germany, which bought 10% of Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie total export.
“We are currently working hard both to maintain the presence and to create an evolved knowledge about the appellation itself as well about its quality parameters on ‘uncommon’ countries like Japan, Vietnam, Mexico and Brazil,” Sequino told db.
Fully certified
Furthermore, the number of wines which met the DOC’s strict requirements in order to be certified a Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie wine grew by 8% last year, compared with 2023.
A significant number of these certifications were granted in the month of December, which saw a 16% year-on-year increase in certifications (compared with December 2023), suggesting that producers were keen to start 2025 with their wines officially certified as Delle Venezie products.
Sequino emphasised that through pursuing the Delle Venezie certification wineries agreed to implement production measures promoted by the Consortium, which “help maintain market stability”. He stressed that this is of “tremendous value for our stakeholders.”
“Pinot Grigio delle Venezie’s natural place is in the Italian north-east and, to make the distinctive style that has made it successful around the world even more appreciated, we must work more than ever to give voice, even in the production area, to territorial identity,” Sequino previously told db.
