Athenian Brewery
A Heineken subsidiary, which was originally founded in Athens back in 1963, is now one of the market’s leading beer producers. The brewery showcases a mix of both local and global beer brands, such as Alfa, FIX Hellas, and Fischer being the most popular.
Corfu Beer
Tucked away on the island of Corfu, Corfu Beer is upheld for its artisanal brews that purport to offer up a taste of the Mediterranean. The brewery only uses local ingredients and traditional methods to create its beers that have reportedly become as popular with the locals as well as the many visitors touring the region.
Cretan Brewery
Founded in 2007 by by Ioannis Lionakis, this brewery is known for its fresh, unfiltered beers made without additives. It is based in Chania, Crete and often emphasises its core values that centre around sustainability and eco-friendly initiatives spearheaded by the brewery.
Elixi Microbrewery
Elixi Microbrewery is a small family-run brewery that is solely focused on creating high-quality craft beer. Flagship brands include Delphi Beer which has been inspired by Greece’s heritage. The brewery also has a limited edition series available that shows off its penchant for experimentation.
Fresh Chios Beer
Using local artisanal techniques, this microbrewery is based on Chios Island and incorporates mastic production into its brews, emphasizing artisanal techniques and quality ingredients. Despite its popularity, it still keeps things quite small, with details about its new releases being fairly limited to word of mouth marketing.
Fix Beer
Understood to be Greece’s first major brewery, Johann Karl Fix founded Fix Beer in 1864. The beer was once understood to be the official supplier to the Greek king before it fell on troubled times and faced near bankruptcy in 1983. Luckily, the brewery made a successful comeback in 2009 and now the relaunched beer honours its history and has since gone on to win awards.
Macedonian Thrace Brewery
With a vision to create authentically Greek beer, the brewery was established in Komotini back in 1996 by Greek American Demetri Politopoulos. As such the Vergina beer brand was born and, despite early challenges, it has emerged as a significant player in the local market. Since then, Vergina beer, including its range of variants, have now grown in popularity and have gone on to gain global recognition.
Mythos Brewery
After several ownership changes, Mythos Brewery became a subsidiary of Carlsberg Group in 2015. The brewery itself was originally founded in Thessaloniki in 1997 but traces its roots back to 1992, when it was part of the Boutari Group. Its flagship beer is the 4.7% ABV Mythos Lager which is often a stalwart of many a Greek holiday. It takes its name ‘Mythos’ from the ancient Greek word for beer.
Nissos Brewery
Based on the island of Tinod, Nissos Brewery was founded in 2012 and has been positioned as embodying the flavour of the Cyclades. The brewery primarily promotes its core values of authenticity and emphasises the importance of community, only making beers that it feels are reflective of the island’s culture.
Santorini Brewing Company
In a bid to reflect Santorini’s unique character, the Santorini Brewing Company is the only brewery on the island. It is located in Mesa Gonia, and was founded in 2014 to the delight of locals and tourists alike.
Volkan Beer
Much like Cretan Brewery, Volkan Beer was also established by Ioannis Lionakis back in 2007. Its range includes Santorini Blonde and Santorini Black, which have been brewed with lava rock-filtered water. The brewery is highly committed to sustainability through solar energy as well as being savvy about optimised water use.
Zeos Brewery
Led by the Canadian head brewer David Wood, Zeos Brewery is based in Argos, and was first founded in 1998. It is known for its Zeos Gold Pilsner, Zeos Black Weiss, and Zeos Blue Lager. The brewery emphasises the use of high quality ingredients and veers away from using adjuncts and additives in its brews.
