James May give his gins a South London push
James Gin, a gin by James May, has secured a major London listing with South London street food hotspot Market Place Vauxhall.
The move, which came after signing with independent drinks wholesaler LWC Drinks, has happened after celebrating two years in business and coincides with the business launching a limited edition James Gin-infused menu at its second birthday bash this month.
It was in 2021, during a gap between The Grand Tour specials, that May teamed up with Hugh Anderson of Downton Distillery in Wiltshire to make some gin before demand from all corners of the world outstripped supply.
Then, in 2022, May fused two British classics for his new pub special: gin and battered fish. By October 2023, May expanded his gin brand further with a London Dry Gin called London Drizzle, inspired by the British weather. Then, by December, showing he was not standing still with his spirits venture, May unveiled the prototype for a cocktail glass that could well help users to create the perfect drink.
As part of the new expansion, Market Place will now stock May’s range of three gins, James Gin Asian Parsnip, James Gin London Drizzle and James Gin American Mustard, as permanent pours on the bar.
Speaking at celebrations at the venue this week, May said: “I think my gin and tonic pairs particularly well with gin and tonic. But also fish and chips” and suggested that visitors to Market Place try all of the food available with his gins in their various guises.
To coincide with the celebrations, Market Place street food vendors also paired the gin with a James Gin inspired food menu which they had created specifically for people to sample the food and drink alongside each other on site.
Options included gin and duck croquettes from The Duck Shed, Japanese chicken karaage with James Gin spicy orange mayo and orange zest from Inamo Sukoshi, James Gin and tonic battered haddock from Wicked Fish, and a James Gin infused Yorkshire burrito from Yorkshire Burrito.
