Istituto Grandi Marchi marks 20th anniversary with London tasting

The Istituto Grandi Marchi will be arriving in London this June for a tasting that showcases 18 of Italy’s leading family-run producers.

Taking place on 25 June at Plaisterers’ Hall, near to the Barbican, the event will see producers from the length and breadth of Italy, from the Alpine region of Piedmont to the sun-baked isle of Sicily.

The following producers, the members of the Istituto Grandi Marchi, will be present:

  • Ambrogio e Giovanni Folonari
  • Marchesi Antinori
  • Argiolas
  • Ca’ del Bosco
  • Carpene’ Malvolti
  • Col d’Orcia
  • Donnafugata
  • Jermann
  • Lungarotti
  • Masi
  • Mastroberardino
  • Michele Chiarlo
  • Pio Cesare
  • Rivera
  • Tasca d’Almerita
  • Tenuta San Guido
  • Tenuta San Leonardo
  • Umani Ronchi

While the styles of their wines range significantly, covering everything from Masi’s Amarone to Donnafugata’s Zibibbo-based Ben Ryé, these producers all share a number of key values. In addition to all being family-owned, each member has been in operation for at least a quarter of a century (and, in some cases, much, much longer than that), all also own their estate vineyards, all promote innovation and education in the Italian wine sector, and, perhaps most crucially of all, all are recognised for the quality of their wines.

In addition to a walk around tasting, taking place from 12.30pm to 4pm, which will give visitors the chance to sample some of these iconic wines, there will also be a masterclass beforehand, from 11am to 12.30pm.

The focus of the class will be the 2004 vintage, a year that was not only celebrated across Italy for the quality of the wines it produced, but it is also the year that the Istituto Grandi Marchi was founded.
