Diageo’s £26m expansion at Baileys factory gets the go-ahead

Diageo is set to move ahead with plans for an extension to its Baileys Irish cream liqueur factory after local council approval was granted.

The expansion plans for the factory, based in Mallusk, will expand the current site footprint by an additional 7,477m² and according to local reports, will help the evolving needs of the company’s global operations and the demand for Baileys.

The new single storey extension will include: Additional warehouse capacity; staff facilities; solar PV and associated external plant equipment; an increase in staff car parking; EV charging points; trailer bays; improved site access; external lighting columns and landscaping.

The site in Mallusk is one of only two locations in the world where Baileys is manufactured and local sources allege that around 97% of the factory’s produce is shipped to other countries.

Benefits of the expansion are also due to assist with offering up 100 construction jobs and around 35 posts upon completion.

Speaking on the investment, the mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey councillor Mark Cooper said: “This £26m investment by Diageo further bolsters the borough’s reputation as a prime location for business.”

According to Cooper: “Diageo have been successfully operating at Mallusk for over 20 years and this additional investment indicates their commitment to the growth and development of manufacturing skills in the area. I wish them every success for the future.”

The chair of Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council’s Planning Committee, councillor Robert Foster added: “I welcome this significant investment by world leading drinks supplier Diageo.”
