Select Aperitivo opens new facility in Venice

Venetian drinks brand Select Aperitivo has announced the opening of Ca’ Select, a new distillery and visitor centre in the city’s Cannaregio district.

Founded in 1920, Select Aperitivo claims to have been one of the original ingredients of the Venetian spritz. The bitter aperitivo itself combines more than 30 botanicals, including rhubarb roots and juniper berries.

While the Pilla brothers founded Select Aperitivo in the city’s Castello district, Ca’ Select is located in the neighbouring neighbourhood of Cannaregio.

Marcante-Testa Architects designed the new space, including the steel bar counter that has been covered in blue glass plates to echo the Venetian lagoon.

The mosaics at the entrance were inspired by the works of Spanish-born designer Mariano Fortuny, who lived in Venice for much of his life, and the tiles were hand cut by Orsoni 1888.

The facility itself is divided into four areas.

In the production area the maceration of the herbs and spices takes a place, while the bar-mixology area will offer visitors a taste of cocktails using Select Aperitivo. There is also an exhibition space, curated by Studio Fludd, that offers an interactive display about Venice, and an events area.

Among the designs located within are also those of Ukrainian artist Koshevoy Bogdan, who won Ca’ Select Arte, Select Aperitivo’s art competition for the under 35s, last year.

Marco Ferrari, CEO of Gruppo Montenegro, which counts Select Aperitivo in its spirits portfolio, said: “Ca’ Select, created thanks to a significant investment, represents a fundamental step in our multi-year plan to consolidate the brand and aims to strengthen the link with the city of origin.”

“It is no coincidence that we have decided to bring the heart of Select’s production here, to enhance the local culture, starting with the valuable architectural elements that enrich the space,” he added.

Drinks brands seem to be increasingly use art as a means of promoting their beverages. Veuve Clicquot celebrated its 250th anniversary with the opening of an artistic exhibition space in London.
