The major heatwave which swept across the UK earlier this week may have abated, but summer is far from over.

Whether you’re enjoying a glass of rosé at the beach, or sipping on something sparkling in the garden, there is nothing worse than having flies buzzing around your glass, trying to get a taste of the good stuff.

To tackle the thirsty critters, Manchester Evening News shared this easy trick online, first shared by the wine brand Silver Bay Point back in 2019.

And the best part of this wine hack? It costs just 1p, and you probably have all of the elements you need to try it right now.

It’s also the perfect go-to for any drink – from Champagne and rosé to lemonade and orange juice – making it great for kids’ birthdays and garden parties too.

All you need is a paper cupcake case, a straw, and a pair of scissors. Start by cutting a small hole in the cupcake case, and slip your straw through, holding the cupcake case upside down.

Then, just place both the straw in your glass, positioning the cupcake case over the rim, creating a lid.

And hey presto – you will never be bothered by little critters again!

This trick also works to keep cans and bottles safe from flies and wasps too, so it really is the perfect hack for the summer months.

In other news, one TikTok user has stunned the internet with his ingenious method for consuming wine on the go. Using a Barefoot Riesling for demonstration purposes, Dalrymple removes the screw cap and replaces it with a Smart Water bottle cap.

The clip has already gained momentum on TikTok with more than half a million likes. Read more on that here.
