Duran Duran steals entire wine glass stash for backstage

Following the band’s Hyde Park gig last week, Duran Duran are said to have nabbed all stemmed glasses for their private area, leaving other VIP guests to drink wine and Champagne from pint glasses and coffee mugs.

Their days of throwing TVs out of windows might be over, but Duran Duran showed they’re not beyond diva behaviour when they apparently snatched all glassware for themselves after a recent performance.

According to a source backstage at the band’s BST Hyde Park show last week, Simon Le Bon and bandmates ordered festival bosses to divert the site’s entire haul of wine glasses and Champagne flutes to the band’s private area, leaving other VIP guests to sip from pint glasses and coffee cups.

The source said: “The wine was flowing in fancy glasses there. But outside, in the rest of the VIP area, people had to resort to glugging their Champagne in a far less sophisticated manner.”

Unsurprisingly, the move has generated a slew of lyric-based puns as fans poke fun at the band’s entitled exploits.

“They used to be Hungry Like the Wolf, now they’re thirsty for some Wolf Blass,” wrote one media outlet.

“They said in their song Butterfly Girl, ‘There’s only one kind of happy in that glass of wine’. Should that be pint of wine?’ quipped another.

Eagle-eyed shoppers may also have spotted that ebay is selling Duran Duran-engraved crystal wine glasses for £15.99 per glass. Described as “A single Michelangelo 34cl contemporary wine glass beautifully engraved with a Duran Duran themed frieze”, the product uses “traditional sandblast engraving techniques” to produce fine detail and a distinctive finish – “A stunning gift for any Duran Duran lover.”

The band is known for shipping their favourite wines around the world with them on tour, with Nick Rhodes once saying: “We had a case specially created to keep all the wine fairly still and secure. It stored around 100 bottles, maybe 120. It was a real luxury.”

One band member – John Taylor – is teetotal, while according to Rhodes, he and Simon make a beeline for red wines, and Roger Taylor for whites.
