Not all heroes wear capes – sometimes they clutch cans of beer and attend baseball Spring Training games.

According to the photographer who captured the remarkable series of pictures, this particular fan managed to save his date from being struck hard by a foul ball, after it hit a can of beer he was holding – causing it to explode.

The photographer uploaded the images to Instagram, captioning the snaps:

“While covering an @angels Spring Training game today, a line drive foul ball went wizzing into the crowd. I swung my camera with a 600mm plus 1.4 converter (840mm) trying to guess where the ball would go and barely caught on the edge of the frame the ball nailing a fans beer can and spraying everyone in the section with the beer. I felt bad for him losing a 12 dollar beer but it quite literally may have saved his dates life as it stopped the ball from hitting her in the head. His valiant sacrifice would be rewarded when Angels staff would deliver him a @miketrout autographed bat and more importantly, more beer! 🍻 ⚾️”

The man in question was given some fresh beers and an autographed bat for his troubles, and the Oakland Athletics went on to beat the Los Angeles Angels in the game.

Meanwhile, a brewery in the UK has launched a massive 99-pack of beer, which it will deliver to your door. You can read more about that here.
