Henkell Freixenet sells Deinhard wine business

Henkell Freixenet has sold its sparkling and still wine business under the Deinhard brand to Peter Mertes KG in Germany’s Bernkastel-Kues.

In addition to the sparkling wine business in Germany with Deinhard Lila and Deinhard Cabinet, the sale includes the international wine business of Deinhard Wines.

The Deinhard Wine assortment, focused on Riesling, is the market leader in the German wine category in Canada.

“We are pleased to have found in Peter Mertes a company that will continue the tradition of Deinhard brand as one of the oldest sparkling wine and wine houses in Germany. The sale enables us to focus further on our international and local sparkling wine core brands such as Freixenet, Mionetto and Henkell in our markets abroad as well as in our home market Germany,” said Dr. Andreas Brokemper, spokesman for the management of Henkell Freixenet.

The Peter Mertes KG is Germany’s leading winery. The company, which has been family-run for four generations and is based in Bernkastel-Kues, is also one of the most important players in the international wine industry. The portfolio includes well-known wine brands such as Rotwild, Maybach, Bree as well as the organic labels Landlust and Biorebe.

The transfer of the Deinhard brand to Peter Mertes KG took place on 1 September 2020.
