Hong Kong tightens social distancing measures as Covid cases climb

The Hong Kong government has tightened social distancing rules again as local coronavirus cases have stoked fears of a third wave.

Since 5 July, Hong Kong has reported a continual surge in local infection cases, with a record of 34 cases on 9 July. As a result, on the same day, the Hong Kong government has announced a re-introduction of social distancing with school suspension starting from 10 July.

The social distancing measures in Hong Kong were relaxed in mid-June as the pandemic situation was thought to be under control with 21 days of zero infection cases.

The new restrictions will take effect on 11 July and will last for two weeks. Restaurants need to operate at a maximum capacity of 60% and allow only eight people per table, while the limit for bars will be four.

Nightclubs must also limit operations to 60% capacity, with the maximum number of people per table decreasing from eight to four. The limit on public gatherings will remain unchanged at groups of 50 people.
