Joining a global community of over 2,500 other certified B Corps, including Patagonia and Innocent, the common goal is to build a more inclusive and sustainable economy.

“As a brewery we have always done things a little differently – as well as make great tasting beer we’ve ensured everything we do is done in a considerate way that future-proofs our business and the environment,” co-founder James Grundy said.

“We are very proud that our philosophy has been acknowledged by B Corp. We worked for it because it’s the way we want to do business,” he added.

Founded in 2017, The Small Beer Brewery runs on renewable energy and all of its packaging is recycled and recyclable.

It is the only UK brewery known to champion a ‘dry floor’ policy at the brewery, conceived by co-founder Felix James’s re-working of the brewing process in order to reduce the amount of water needed to brew Small Beer.

In the last 18 months the duo have saved 1.4m litres of water, cutting down the water used in the brewing process from 8-10 pints to 1.5 per pint of beer brewed.

“We have never viewed sustainability as something to compromise on when running a successful business. Our focus on efficiency and innovation makes us much stronger as a business and more valuable to our community.

“We want Small Beer to be around and relevant in 10 years, and with burgeoning pressures on our climate we need to evolve and adapt with the times,” James said.

All Small Beer Brew Co. beers are vegan, lactose free and sustainably brewed in Bermondsey, southeast London. All of the beers have an ABV of below 2.8%.

The Drinks Business will be celebrating the heroes of the beer, wine and spirits industry championing sustainable initiatives at our 10thannual Green Awards ceremony next week at The Club at The Ivy in London’s Covent Garden.
