Record prices at Douro Boys auction

Port producing collective the Douro Boys celebrated its 15th anniversary with the release and auction of a limited edition Port and Douro table wine from the 2017 vintage.

Held this week at the Six Senses Hotel in the Douro Valley, the auction counted 50 lots comprising 1,115 magnums of the two wines, in groupings of single to as many as 90 bottles and some included other rare and library releases from the Douro Boys’ estates.

The wines themselves, both the Port and the table wine, are a unique blend from the 2017 vintage using wines from each of the five estates that make up the Douro Boys (Quinta do Vallado, Niepoort, Quinta do Crasto, Quinta Vale D Maria and Quinta do Vale Meao).

The average price per magnum was €295 – a new record following the 2007 and 2013 auctions – and €4,800 raised from one lot of 15 magnums was donated to local youth charity, Bagos d’Ouro, to help 33 children attend after school sports or arts classes.

Cristiano van Zeller of Quinta Vale D Maria, commented: “The results of the auction show us with marvellous clarity that the Douro Boys enjoy the highest recognition, and that their wines are in high demand. We have not only managed to make the Douro better known, but also to give our common brand sustainably high value”.
