New York’s Dante named ‘World’s Best Bar’

Popular apéritivo bar Dante in New York’s West Village was named the best bar on the planet at The World’s 50 Best Bars awards ceremony in London last night.

The awards took place at the Roundhouse in Camden, with entries from 26 cities in 21 countries, including 17 new entries on this year’s list.

Dante has deep roots inGreenwich Village– it opened as Caffe Dante in 1915 and reopened a century later in 2015 under the ownership of Aussies Linden Pride and Natalie Hudson.

A simple space filled with white tiles, cream and navy leather banquettes, and low-hung lights, Dante’s Italian influence shines through in its classic apéritivo cocktails, from the Negroni and Bellini to the Aperol Spritz, which are served alongside burrata on toasted rye; wild boar pappardelle; and pork and beef meatballs baked with orzo.

“We couldn’t be more honoured to be named the World’s Best Bar at the most prestigious of awards ceremony in London,” a proud Pride told CNN.

“We will continue to focus on our approach to hospitality and creating those special moments for every guest that comes through our door,” he added.

Coming 9th on last year’s list, in addition to clinching the top spot this year, Dante was also named the World’s Best Bar and Best American Restaurant Bar at the Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards in New Orleans.

New York put in a strong performance last night, with six entries on the list, including the NoMad bar at number 4, and Attaboy at number 7.

London also proved itself as the cocktail capital of Europe, with The Connaught Bar scooping second place, the American Bar at The Savoy at number 5, Three Sheets at 16 and Coupette at 23.

Further down the list, London’s Scout came 28th, Lyaness took the 39th spot, Happiness Forgets was 40th, Soho’s Swift came 41st, newcomer Kwant entered at 47 and the Artesian, which has topped the list a record four times, dropped to 48th place.
